Google updates Indexing API quota guidance: don't use it for ordinary blog posts

Google updated documentation covering Indexing API quotas and the request process. The API remains restricted to specific job-posting and livestream page types.

The story

Google Search Central's documentation updates page records a 16 October 2026 change to its Indexing API quota page. Google says it updated information about current quotas and the quota-request process and removed an outdated form.

That is a documentation change, not an announcement that all website owners can request instant indexing. Google's official Indexing API guidance continues to limit the API to pages with JobPosting structured data or BroadcastEvent embedded in a VideoObject for livestreams.

Google's quota documentation describes default testing limits, but those numbers should not be interpreted as permission to submit ordinary marketing pages, article pages, landing pages or product listings to the API.

For most service-business websites, the practical workflow is less dramatic: allow relevant URLs to be crawled, use descriptive links, submit a sitemap through the appropriate verified Search Console property, and check whether Google has indexed important pages. A sitemap and inspection request are discovery signals, not ranking guarantees.

IFFI Media's blog and service pages are ordinary editorial and business content. We should use conventional Search Console workflows for them rather than pretending an Indexing API workaround is available.

IFFI Media perspective

A revised API quota document does not create a fast-indexing shortcut for service pages or blogs. Keep normal pages crawlable, publish useful content, maintain your sitemap and inspect eligible URLs in Search Console.

What businesses can do now

  • Check your robots rules, canonical links and generated sitemap for the exact URLs you intend people to find.
  • If you own the verified Search Console property, submit the sitemap and inspect important URLs using its supported tools.
  • Use the Indexing API only when the page type genuinely meets Google's documented job-posting or livestream eligibility rules.
  • Review Search Console index coverage and actual search clicks over time; a fresh documentation update does not imply a new ranking benefit.
